How Cloudflare, Dynatrace, and Datadog Work Together for Web Application Security and Observability

In today’s era of the AI revolution, it is not enough merely to keep ourselves away from cyber threats; we must ensure that such threats never find a way to reach us. especially when we are in the position of maintaining a web application, it becomes imperative to deliver services to our users with comprehensive, 360‑degree protection. And followed by the application must be equipped with continuous and proactive observability, enabling us to clearly understand and monitor the real‑time experience of the end user.

How Cloudflare Works for Web Applications

  1. When a user accesses a web application, the request does not go directly to the web server.
  2. The request first passes through Cloudflare, which acts as a secure protective layer between the user and the application.
  3. Cloudflare analyses and filters malicious traffic before it reaches the server.
  4. Only clean, verified, and trusted requests are forwarded to the web application.
  5. This ensures the application remains secure, stable, and accessible for real users at all times.
Cloudflare not only safeguards against cyber threats but also prevents AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini from crawling your application’s solutions and resources.

The illustration below shows how Cloudflare functions as a proxy between the web application and the end user.

On the other side, we have the observability services from Dynatrace and Datadog, where we can configure synthetic monitoring for 24/7 proactive monitoring and RUM (real user monitoring) for your web pages helath status or downtime errors, which was expericneing by the end users.

How Dynatrace can work for Web Applications

  1. Synthetic Monitoring: Keep track of your webpages' health status and API uptime, performance, and availability, with alerts triggered whenever failures occur.
  2. Cloudflare Extension Monitoring: Monitor CDN, DNS, traffic, and security metrics, and set up alerts to detect unusual activity.
  3. AI‑Powered Alerts & Dashboards: Spot issues on the fly with root‑cause analysis, backed by live, interactive dashboards.

How Datadog can work for Web Applications

  1. Real User Monitoring (RUM): Measure the actual end‑user experience by tracking page load times, errors, and session metrics. We can also get the metrics like LCP, FCP, slowest resources, and we can narrow down on troubleshooting, where we can see load actions and their response times
  2. Alerts & Notifications: Set up tailor‑made alerts to catch performance dips or sudden error surges, with seamless connectivity to Slack, email, and other preferred channels.
  3. Dashboards & Analytics: Bring together user experience, infrastructure health, and application performance in a single, unified dashboard for crisp and actionable insights.

Use Case Implementation: Cloudflare, Dynatrace and Datadog

Before proceeding with the implementation of this use case, kindly ensure that all necessary subscriptions for your web application are in place. Although this exercise is intended purely for educational purposes, we have already availed free trial accounts from Dynatrace, Cloudflare, and Datadog. The subscription details are as follows:
  1. Dynatrace – 15‑day free trial
  2. Datadog – 14‑day free trial
  3. Cloudflare – Free plan available indefinitely, with limited services

1. Configuring Cloudflare for Your Web Application

  1. login into your Cloudflare account
  2. Add your web application domain (.com or .in ) by clicking on the (+) icon in the top right corner
  3. Select all the necessary options, like don't crawl the AI chatbots and others.
  4. Log in to your DNS provider (usually your domain registrar).
  5. Ensure DNSSEC is disabled: Locate the DNS Security (DNSSEC) option and turn it off. You may re‑enable it later through Cloudflare.
  6. Navigate to the Nameservers section in your DNS settings.
  7. Add the Cloudflare nameservers assigned to you: abc.cloudflare.com, xyz.cloudflare.com
  8. Remove the existing nameservers, which were previously assigned
  9. Once the Cloudflare configuration is successfully completed, you will see a message on your Cloudflare dashboard that Cloudflare is protecting your website
  10. Cloudflare offers features such as Core Web Vitals, Network Performance, HTTP Traffic analysis, and Synthetic Monitoring tests.
  11. By default, when you are on the free plan, the following Cloudflare features are included: Page Shield, Bot Fight Mode, Leaked Credentials protection, and Speed Optimisations.
Cloudflare configuration has been completed. For more information on cloudflare advance features, please refer to Cloudflare Official Documentation

2. Configuring Dynatrace for Your Web Application

Dynatrace enables proactive 24/7 monitoring of your web pages from multiple public locations worldwide using synthetic monitoring. Two types of synthetic monitors can be configured:
  1. Browser Clickpath Monitor: Captures the frontend user interface, ensuring that pages load correctly and all images render completely.
  2. HTTP Monitor: Tracks the health status of API endpoints, verifying whether they are operational (up) or unavailable (down).
  3. Please refer to our Dynatrace Synthetic Monitoring Guides if you are new to Dynatrace.
  4. You can track the status of the synthetic monitors configured for your web application’s pages directly within a Dashboard. Dynatrace Dashboards present a comprehensive view of all issues and impacted entities in a single unified window.
  5. As we configured Cloudflare Protection, Dynatrace have the capability to monitor the data from Cloudflare through an extension. Refer to Dynatrace Official Documentation for the Cloudflare extension.
  6. Before proceeding to configure the Cloudflare extension in Dynatrace, you must obtain an API token from Cloudflare.
  7. The API token from Cloudflare should have the following permissions, as shown in the snapshot below.

  8. Kindly keep your Cloudflare Account ID readily available, as it will be essential while configuring the extension in Dynatrace.
  9. A Dynatrace ActiveGate is required for configuring the Cloudflare extension.
  10. Once you complete the configuration of the Cloudflare extension, the status should display as OK if successful. Please wait at least 10 minutes for the status to update.
  11. If the status appears as ERROR or Pending for a long time, kindly troubleshoot by reviewing the logs within the extension. For reference, please check the snapshot provided below.

  12. Dynatrace Cloudflare Extension collects critical information and makes it available within Dynatrace for monitoring and analytics, in alignment with the rest of your Dynatrace data.
  13. The extension queries multiple Cloudflare APIs to gather metrics as well as notification history, which are then ingested into Dynatrace.
  14. Notification History is also captured, enabling visibility into Cloudflare‑detected events such as DDoS attacks directly within Dynatrace Dashboards.
  15. Configure alerts in Dynatrace with metrics that are enabled through cloudflare extension for immediate attention.
  16. Please refer snapshots below for reference on the Dynatrace Cloudflare extension.

3. Configuring Datadog for Your Web Application

Set up Real User Monitoring (RUM) for the frontend of your web application. RUM helps you capture how real users actually experience your app, while Synthetic Monitoring runs scripted checks in a controlled setup. RUM gives you ground reality, and Synthetic offers proactive, predictable testing. The smart practice is to use both side-by-side for complete visibility and assurance.

For a step‑by‑step walkthrough, check out our detailed guide: How to Implement Datadog Real User Monitoring (RUM) Using Manual JavaScript Code – Complete Guide. This resource explains the configuration process in depth, making it easier to set up RUM effectively.
